How swimming points work
Every event has a base time, set by World Aquatics for each pool length and category. The base time is worth exactly 1000 points. Your points are:
Points = 1000 × (base time ÷ your time)³, rounded down.
Because the ratio is cubed, points fall away quickly as a time gets slower: a swim 10% slower than the base time is worth about 751 points, and one 50% slower is worth about 296. That is what makes the scale useful. It lets you compare a 50 m breaststroke with a 400 m freestyle, or a man's swim with a woman's, on one number.
The official World Aquatics tables list 300 to 1100 points. Below 300, this calculator carries on with the same formula, so a recreational swim still gets a score.
Base times used
Long course (50 m) uses the World Aquatics 2026 base times. Short course (25 m) uses the 2025 base times. Times are in minutes and seconds. The 100 m individual medley is only swum in short course.

Frequently asked questions
How are swimming points calculated?
Points = 1000 × (base time ÷ your time)³, rounded down. The base time is set by World Aquatics for each event, pool length and gender, and is worth exactly 1000 points. Because the ratio is cubed, every second counts for more the faster you go.
Are FINA points and World Aquatics points the same?
Yes. FINA renamed itself World Aquatics in December 2022. The 0–1000 points scale and the formula stayed the same; only the base times are updated each year.
Why do I get different points in a 25 m and a 50 m pool?
Short course (25 m) and long course (50 m) have separate base times, because turns make short-course swims faster. The same time is worth fewer points in a 25 m pool than in a 50 m pool.
Is this an official World Aquatics calculator?
No. It applies the formula and base times World Aquatics publishes. Laps is not affiliated with World Aquatics. For official results, use the points on the official results of your meet.
Can I calculate points for a 25-yard pool?
Not here. The World Aquatics points tables only cover 25 m and 50 m pools.
